During his career, from 2000 to 2005, Mike Smart was a cornerstone of the Carleton basketball program and one of the team’s key culture builders. As a leader throughout his basketball career, he helped lead the team to several accomplishments, including their first three CIS National Championships from 2003 to 2005. In 2004, Smart was named Carleton University’s Men’s Athlete of the Year, team MVP, Ontario University Athletics Male Athlete of the Year, and Ontario East Division First Team All-Star along with being named an All-Star and MVP at the national championship tournament. As team captain in 2004, Smart helped Carleton establish a CIS record of 50 consecutive victories over university opponents in regular season and postseason play.
