Rob Smart has been a member of the coaching staff with the Ravens since the 2004-05 season, where he has helped lead the team to thirteen U SPORTS national championships, including ten as an assistant coach (2005-2007, 2009, 2011-2015, 2017, 2019, 2021), and an eleventh title as interim head coach (2016).
On August 3, 2015, Rob Smart was named the interim head coach of the Carleton Ravens men's basketball team. Smart guided the Ravens to a 17-3 regular season record in 2015-16, and a 2-1 OUA playoff record. The men's basketball team automatically advanced to the CIS Final 8 at UBC in Vancouver, BC, where Smart guided the No. 2-seeded Ravens to a perfect 3-0 record at nationals, earning Carleton its sixth consecutive national title and twelfth national title overall.
For his outstanding work as interim head coach, Rob Smart was the recipient of the 2015-16 Pat O'Brien Award as Coach of the Year at Carleton University.
During his time as a CIS player at Carleton, Smart was named a CIS Second Team All-Canadian in 2001, a Third Team All-Canadian in 2002, and a First Team All-Canadian in 2003, in addition to being chosen an OUA First Team All-Star in all three of those years (2001-2003). Smart, who played guard during his university career, was also named OUA East Player of the Year in 2001. In his final season as a player in 2002-03, he was a key member of the Ravens men's basketball team that won the school's first CIS national basketball championship.
Smart is a faculty member at Carleton's Sprott School of Business. He holds a Ph.D. in Management (Carleton University) and a Masters of Business Administration (Carleton University).
