PICKERING, Ont. – The Carleton Ravens faced a deep field and a challenging course at the OUA Championship held Friday at Cherry Hill. The men’s Ravens looked to continue their momentum after a strong showing at the OUA Regionals, but it wasn’t to be. Daniel Ryan (Ottawa, Ont.) was the lone Raven to crack the top ten, finishing +2 (73) in a four-way tie for ninth.
On the women’s side of the tournament, Greely’s Emma Harvie – the lone Raven in the field – played a strong round shoot a +16 (88) for a top fifteen finish.
A pair of new OUA champions were crowned on the links on Friday afternoon at Cherry Downs Golf Club, with the Western Mustangs women and Queen’s Gaels men claiming the gold medals.
It was the first win for Western since 2008, while Queen’s struck gold for the first time in 24 years.
On the men’s side, Queen’s dominated the field with three players finishing at -1 to rank in the top five, individually. Zachary Greifenberger took home the individual silver medal on a retrogression tiebreaker, thanks to a strong back nine holes.
Coming into the championship as the reigning gold medalists, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks had another strong showing and finished in second place overall. The Hawks were led by Conor Gaudet who finished tied for sixth with an even round.
Rounding out the team podium on the men’s side was the Guelph Gryphons who needed a tiebreaker to earn the bronze medal. The Gryphons and McMaster Marauders each finished at +14 and needed their fifth player’s score to factor into the total. Leading the Gryphons was Justin Allen who claimed the individual bronze medal to go with his team hardware.
The men’s individual champion was Thomas DeMarco from the Windsor Lancers, who shot a strong -3 round.
On the women’s side, Western had three of the top seven individual scores and won the team title by 11 strokes. Lexie McKay led the Mustangs with an individual silver medal performance, posting a +4 score.
Similar to the men’s results, the Windsor Lancers entered the championship as the defending champions but came away with silver this time around. The Lancers were led by a +6 performance from Laura DeMarco.
The Ottawa Gee-Gees claimed the team bronze medal with a combined score of +43 and was led by fourth place finisher, Rachel Jackson and her +8 round.
The women’s individual champion was Jacqueline Giles from the Guelph Gryphons, who shot +2 on the day, including a birdie on the 18th to help seal the win.
