TORONTO – While the score may show a basketball game that was not really competitive, that could not be farther from the truth. After a long and scrappy back and forth game, the Carleton Ravens defeated the York Lions 92-71 to improve their record to an undefeated 5-0.
The game began extremely competitive with both teams exchanging opportunities until Aiden Warnholtz (Ottawa, Ont.) would hit a three-pointer to give the Ravens their first four-point lead of the night. As the two teams continued to exchange opportunities a Prince Kamunga three-pointer late in the corner would extend the Lions lead. The Lions would lead at the end of the first 21-20.
In the second quarter, Connor Vreeken (Kingston, Ont.) had twelve of the Ravens 24 points as they pulled away to a small 44-41 lead to end the half. Vreeken was five for seven from the field and two for four from deep to carry the Ravens back into the fight.
The Ravens were able to build momentum as a team in the third quarter and eventually led by 14 points. Alain Louis (Montreal, Que.) and Biniam Ghebrekidan (Ont.) combined for 14 points while Lloyd Pandi had six, to go along with three rebounds, as the Ravens started to pull away.
After outscoring the Lions 24-9 in the third quarter, things would balance out in the fourth as the two teams would find the parity that plagued the first quarter. Pandi and Ghebrekidan would score seven each, as the Ravens put up 24 to silence the Lions and extend their undefeated streak to five games.
The two teams tip-off for game two of their weekend doubleheader Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
