OTTAWA – With great sadness, the Carleton Athletics community mourns the passing of alumnus Robert “Bob” Eccles. Eccles was a two-sport athlete for the Ravens from 1967-1971, playing both football and hockey. After graduation, he was active in the Old Crows Society and was Carleton’s football field announcer for 10 years. Eccles was inducted into the Carleton Ravens Hall of Fame on February 12, 2000.
An active participant in both football and hockey, Eccles particularly excelled in football. In 1969, he was selected as an All-Canadian by Sport Canada magazine. In 1970 he was selected as the top representative of amateur football in the Ottawa area by the Association of Canadian Travellers (A.C.T.). He was then the first draft choice (second overall) of the Ottawa Rough Riders in 1971. He was a league All-Star for three years, twice winner of the Old Crows Society Outstanding Player Award, and a recipient of both the Doug Banton Award (1969/70) and the Jack Vogan Award (1971/72).
Eccles was also the defensive captain of the Ravens from 1969 through 1971, and his career record of 121 yards-returned-on-interceptions stands as second overall in the Carleton record book.
