The Nordic ski team had strong performances this past weekend in the first races of the 2016 Ski Nationals in Whitehorse, YT. In the CCUNC (Canadian College and University Nordic Championships), Saturday saw veteran Carrington Pomeroy (Chelsea, QC) teaming up with rookie Brendon Howard (Kanata, ON) to notch the bronze medal position in the team sprint competition. The Ravens, who were looking to rebound following a disappointing team relay event at 2016 OUA Championships, too control early on while facing heavy competition from Lakehead, Nipissing and Laval.
On the women’s side, Emily Jones (Huntsville, ON) and rookie Megan Evans (Revelstoke, BC) skied a similar race, placing 3rd, again behind Lakehead and Laval, while a second Carleton team represented by Isabelle Maclean (Sudbury, ON) and Adrienne Hynes (Whitehorse, YK) just missed the podium as they placed 4th.
On Sunday, the team continued its winning ways in the interval start classic race (5km for women, 10km for men). Carleton rookie Ryan Jackson secured a 2nd place finish behind Lakehead’s Scott Hill, who is ranked 1st for his Junior Man age category. Carrington Pomeroy did not fare as well in his second race, finishing 7th, followed by Brendon Howard in 8th. Megan Evans remained hot from the previous day, as she raced to a 2nd place finish (1st in the Junior category) behind Lakehead student and Senior National Ski team member, Katherine Stewart-Jones. Rounding out the top 10 were Alex Slobodian (Stittsville, ON) in 6th, Adrienne Hynes in 8th, and Zoe Williams (Cantley, QC) in 9th.
For Tuesday’s skate race, strong performances are expected from Jackson and Pomeroy, with OUA All-Star Patrick van Walraven (Ottawa, ON) poised to break through. Evans will be looking to continue her impressive performances throughout the week, backed by Slobodian and Jones.
Races take a break on Monday and start back up on Tuesday for both the men’s and women’s team. The competitions run all week and culminate next Saturday with long distance classic races.
