QUEBEC CITY, QC -- The Carleton Ravens track and field team raced its way to a program record eight medals at the 2017 RSEQ Track and Field Championships held at Laval University from February 24-25.
The Ravens track and field program, now in its second year of RSEQ competition, continued its successful 2016-17 campaign at the conference championships, surpassing last season's haul of five medals with some fantastic individual and team results. The women's team finished fifth overall, while the men's team earned a third-place finish behind Laval and Sherbrooke.
Over the weekend, several athletes achieved personal bests and outstanding times against some of Canada's toughest competition:
Telvin Tavernier (Midland, ON) - Tavernier, who was named the RSEQ's Male Athlete of the Championships, stole the show after securing three medals - a gold in pole vault (4.50m), a silver in long jump (6.52m), and a second silver medal while achieving a new program record of 8.86 seconds in the 60m hurdles.
Amelia Brohman (Ottawa, ON) – The graduating senior and returning 6om RSEQ champion from 2016 collected a silver medal in her top event, helping her qualify for the U SPORTS nationals for the very first time as she met the automatic qualifying standard at 7.66 seconds.
Sebastian Saville (Ottawa, ON) - The fourth-year psychology major won a gold medal in the 600m event and set a new school record (1:20.07) in the process to earn an automatic bid to the U SPORTS nationals. Saville wasn't done there, as he participated in all three of Carleton's team relays at the championships, earning a silver medal in the 4 x 800m event followed by a bronze in the 4 x 400m competition.
Emmanuel Nwokobia (Nigeria) & Victor Oguejiofor (Nigeria)- Competing against one another in the 60m final, the two Ravens went neck and neck down to the finish line, with Nwokobia finishing third in a program record time of 7.07 seconds, just .02 seconds ahead of fourth-place finishing teammate Oguejiofor's 7.09 seconds.
Roshanna Baker (Oakville, ON) - Pushing teammate Amelia Brohman all season long in the 60m, the first-year starlet finished in under 8.20 second for the fifth time in 2016-17, showing plenty of promise for the future.
Marcus Carrington (Scarborough, ON) - Finished the long jump by tying his all-time best Carleton score of 6.40m, ranking him second on the team in the event and fifth at the championships, while collecting an eighth-place showing in the 6om event in 7.30 seconds.
Adeyemi Fatoye (Winnipeg, MB) - Fell just1cm shy of a new high jump school record of 1.85m and nearly hit 6m in the long jump at his first RSEQ championship, completing the weekend with sixth and eighth place finishes overall.
Stephen James (Ottawa, ON) - Just as he did last season, James saved his best for the RSEQ Championships, spinning out a new school record in the weight throw by surpassing the 13m mark and attaining a program record of 13.20m at Laval.
