MONTREAL – The Ravens dropped a close one Sunday afternoon against the Montreal Carabins by the score of 2-0. The game slipped away from Carleton, failing to capitalize on high danger chances late in the game. “The effort was there but I think that overall we were missing a bit of energy on our team,” said Ravens assistant coach Tawnya Guindon. “We worked hard and created some chances, but we were definitely lacking some shots on net.”
The first period was heavily controlled by the Carabins, but the Ravens did a very good job at clearing the front of the net, allowing goaltender Marie Eve Cote (Quebec City, Que.) to track the puck. Carleton could only register three shots, with little in the way of possession throughout the first. While it was an unideal start for them, the game remained scoreless after 20 minutes.
The Ravens remained under pressure as the second period started until Montreal was eventually able to capitalize. A bad Ravens change resulted in a 2-on-1 opportunity and Audrey-Anne Veillette put a nice shot high glove on Cote, making it 1-0 Carabins.
The Ravens then started to pick up their pace and pushed to draw a penalty. While they couldn’t capitalize on the PP, the Ravens gained momentum off of some good zone time. It was the Carabins though who would add on late in the frame. A point shot from Camille Dumont gave Montreal a 2-0 lead. A difficult goal to give up for the Ravens with time ticking down in the second, and momentum in their hands.
The Ravens came out pushing in the third creating some high danger opportunities. Forward Jackie Grosso (Etobicoke, Ont.) had two breakaways in the period, ringing one opportunity off the post. Guindon spoke about the impact Grosso has had. “She’s a very intelligent player. She works hard, gets herself in the proper areas on the ice to create those chances. We knew it was in her and we’re happy that she’s playing well right now in creating those chances.” A late Ravens push was stifled by the Carabins, who closed the door and came out on top 2-0 for their third win of the season.
The loss drops the Ravens to 3-5 on the season, heading to McGill to face off against the Martlets this Thursday, at 7:00pm. “We’re dealing with a lot of injuries right now, ” said Guindon. “We’re short on the roster but they all fought hard and I think that we can bring that into our game against McGill. We know we can play better, and I think we’re all on the same page with that.”
