ROWING: Ravens find place on podium at OUA Championships
The Ravens rowing team returned to Martindale Pond in St. Catharines for the second time this season to compete at the OUA Championships Rowing Regatta. Two weeks prior the team raced in a preliminary event that seeded their crews for this weekend’s championship races.
ST. CATHARINES, ON — The Ravens rowing team returned to Martindale Pond in St. Catharines for the second time this season to compete at the OUA Championships Rowing Regatta. Two weeks prior the team raced in a preliminary event that seeded their crews for this weekend's championship races.
The heats were held Friday afternoon. Although it was a sunny afternoon, the winds made for challenging conditions on the Royal Canadian Henley 2000-meter race course. Despite having to deal with the elements, the men's and women's teams advanced six of the ten crews to the finals.
The finals took place Saturday morning cool conditions with a light drizzle. Fortunately, the winds had diminished from the day before and the water conditions were near ideal for racing.
The Ravens' best result came from the lightweight men's eight with coxswain that edged out McGill to win bronze. This crew consisted of Jason Sukstorf, Mason Hietkamp, Nick Clover, Shane Brockbank, Fabian Erazo, Jeffrey Parkhouse, Liam Gordon, Owen Powell and coxswain Cody Shilliday.
In very close races, three other crews finished just out of the medals in fourth place. They included:
Lightweight Women's Single: Mary-Jo Weir Weiss
Heavyweight Men's Four: Luc Baudouin, Vincent O'Shaughnessey, Matt Lazurek, Hunter Amesbury and coxswain Jenny Creamer
Heavyweight Women's Single: Mikayla Arends
Heavyweight Women's Pair: Bailin Zie, Mikayla Arends
Members of Carleton's rowing team will now move on to compete at the Canadian University Rowing Championships from November 4-5 in Burnaby, British Columbia.
